On October 31st 2026, the Northern Prog Festival will come to Leeuwarden, The Netherlands. At this 13th edition of the festival, we will enjoy four (international) bands.
The festival offers a high-quality live music experience with a strong focus on melody, emotion and musicianship. Unlike mainstream events, this festival celebrates long compositions, thoughtful lyrics and a deep connection between artists and audience. Although the term progressive rock is not familiar to everyone, most people know the bands that made the genre famous, such as Pink Floyd, Genesis, Camel, Yes and Marillion. However, the Northern Prog Festival is not a tribute festival. The performing acts are bands of today playing their own original compositions live. And we are proud to present a truly special line-up for the 2026 edition.
We are delighted to welcome, as the opening act, the Dutch progressive rock project The Ceres Phenomenon. The Ceres Phenomenon was founded by Dutch musicians Mike Boekhout, Julian Driessen, Ron Koel and Ruud Stoker, with Noud Maas recently joining as bassist. These musicians are known from bands such as Timelock, Dreamcarnation and The Last Detail, and they deliver an immersive conceptual sound inspired by greats such as Pink Floyd, Kansas and Saga. Based on a science fiction story by vocalist Ruud Stoker, their self-titled debut album takes you on a 73-minute musical journey full of atmosphere, melody and pure prog energy. Expect epic keyboard passages, cinematic soundscapes and powerful storytelling.
Everyone is aware of what is currently happening in Ukraine. Despite these difficult circumstances, Ukranian musicians are still creating excellent music. But it is not always easy for artists to travel to the Netherlands, so prepare yourself for a unique musical journey with the Ukrainian prog rock formation Karfagen. Led by multi-instrumentalist Antony Kalugin, Karfagen is known for its sweeping symphonic sound, rich compositions and emotional depth. With an impressive catalogue of albums and performances at international festivals, the band has firmly established itself within the prog scene. Expect epic melodies, cinematic soundscapes, virtuosic playing and powerful vocals. Antony’s personality, creativity and energy make each performance an intense live experience not easily forgotten. Karfagen has a vast repertoire to choose from, while also working on new material—offering a rare opportunity to experience their latest creations fresh off the press.
Quantum Fantay is a Belgian instrumental progressive rock band from Lokeren that has carved out a distinctive place for itself within the European prog scene since 2002. Building on a foundation of progressive and space rock, they have developed a recognizable sound in which expansive compositions, Pete Mush’s atmospheric synthesizers, Tom Tee’s melodic guitar work, and a powerful rhythm section consisting of Jaro and Jazzper Coulier come together. Influences from classic space rock can clearly be heard, but Quantum Fantay transforms them into a distinctive, modern form of instrumental prog. Their music moves continuously between melodic passages, complex rhythms, psychedelic atmospheres and powerful rock.
The band uses the freedom of instrumental music to develop compositions across extended musical arcs, incorporating tempo changes, shifting rhythms, improvisational passages and a constant interplay between keyboards, guitars, bass and drums. On their 2026 release The Butterfly EffeX, this approach sounds particularly mature: space rock is combined with symphonic prog, electronic textures and carefully constructed compositions. Quantum Fantay demonstrates that progressive rock does not have to look back only to the 1970s, but can also be adventurous, contemporary and boundary-pushing.
Leap Day, the six-piece formation from the north of the Netherlands, will close the festival in 2026. Leap Day is arguably one of the finest progressive rock bands in the Netherlands today.
The foundation of their compositions is laid down by the outstanding playing and sound of drummer Koen Rozen and bassplayer Harry Scholing. Internationally renowned and virtuosic guitarist Eddie Mulder, together with two excellent keyboardists, Gert van Engelenburg and Derk Evert Waalkens, build a creative and varied symphonic framework, complemented by tasteful and engaging synthesiser and guitar solos. Lead vocals are delivered by Roelof Beeftink, whose warm and powerful voice—at times reminiscent of the legendary singer of Spandau Ballet—lifts the compositions to a level rarely heard in Dutch bands.
Leap Day creates melodic rock with refined structures. Despite subtle twists and complex time signatures, their music remains remarkably accessible and enjoyable to listen to. It is precisely this balance that ensures a highly rewarding live experience. Their compositions tell stories that do not fit within the four-minute format imposed by traditional radio. Lyrics and arrangements are given the space they need to fully unfold and draw the audience into the narrative—something they achieve not only on record, as heard on their latest album When Gravity Wins, but also in their live performances.
The festival will take place at WestCord Leeuwarden. In the concert hall on the first floor, we are able to preserve the atmosphere and accessibility that have always characterised the NPF, while also providing additional space for sound and, especially, stage lighting elements that a festival like the NPF truly deserves.
